Ryan Abernathey
Former Research Assistant, Joint Program

Office:

Scripps Institute of Oceanography

Focus Areas

Earth Systems, Policy Scenarios, Climate Policy

Bio

Advisor:
Prof. John Marshall

Research Topic:
Geophysical fluid dynamics that are responsible for determining Earth's climate, in particular the role of eddies and turbulent processes in the large-scale circulation of the ocean and atmosphere.

Ryan successfully defended his doctoral thesis "Mixing by Ocean Eddies: The Geography of Effective Diffusivity, the Influence of the Winds, and some Implications for the Meridional Overturning Circulation" in January 2012. After staying on for several months as a postdoc, Ryan recently left MIT, heading west to Scripps where he has just started a postdoc position working with MIT-WHOI JP alum Paola Cessi.
