Dr. Xiao has pursued various research fields over 1980s to 1990s, including mangrove forest eco-physiology in Southern China; pollen analysis for reconstruction of vegetation-climate in Holocene in Middle China; grassland ecosystem dynamics in Inner Mongolia, China; terrestrial ecosystem modeling; remote sensing and GIS; and integrated assessment of climate change. His current research focuses on large-scale modeling of terrestrial ecosystem dynamics; observation and modeling of land use and land cover change; applications of remote sensing and GIS to integrated environment assessment, agriculture and ecosystem management. He is leading the Laboratory for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis at the Complex Systems Research Center.
