The work of the Joint Program is funded by an international consortium of corporate, foundation, and government sponsors, and by private donations. Industrial sponsorship is drawn nearly equally from U.S.-based corporations and from abroad.
The U.S. Government funding is through competitive research grants, in response to calls for proposals, and provides individual contracts for specific projects. The federal agencies providing support for Program research are the DOE, NSF, NASA, EPA, USDA, DOT, NREL, and FAA.
Most of the financial support from industry, foundations, and foreign government ministries, flows into the overall efforts of the Program. A few projects receive targeted support from particular industry groups, but the majority of corporate donations are gifts. This enables the Program to maintain a balanced development of its research effort, and to focus on complex linkages among system components.
